Summary of Heart of Fire by Destiny

I'm going to focus on each of the main four points of the episode one by one, so there's going to be no sense of time. The four main points are Henry's flashbacks, Coreen's research, Henry being tortured, and Vicki and Mike trying to find and save Henry.

Henry's flashbacks:

In the first flashback, it becomes apparent that it is sometime during the late 1500s or early 1600s. Henry is thrown into a cell by Javier Mendoza. Javier leaves Henry under the eye of Maria, a servant who believes Henry is evil and Javier is good. Henry begs Maria for water, and she finally relents, although she warns him not to take advantage of her charity. He tries to persuade her to free him, but she turns her back on him to pray.

In the next flashback, we see Henry being tortured by Javier. Henry is chained to a table sort of thing and Javier is heating a metal instrument over the coals red hot. Maria turns away as the torture begins, unable to bear the sight of Henry in pain.

The third flashback shows Henry in his cell, on his back, and for a moment we think he is still chained as he cries out for Maria. She refuses him, and he gets up so that we see he is in his cell. She tells him he is evil, but he finally convinces her that her religion is about mercy. She hands him her rosary and tells him to prove himself. He prays, kisses the rosary, and hands it back to her. Maria opens the cell and Henry walks out, thanking her, before he bites her. He pulls away and offers her his wrist, telling her, "Drink my blood and you will live."

The final flashback shows Henry returning for Maria. She is on the table Henry was chained to earlier, and Javier is walking towards her, stake in hand. She wakes up, sees Javier, smiles, and says, "My love!" His reply is to shove the stake through her heart.

Coreen's research:

All Coreen knows right off the bat is that "Illuminacion del sol" is Spanish. She checks all Spanish and Roman mythology without luck, so she goes to Dr. Sagara, a friend of Henry's who knows a lot about the supernatural. After several hours, Dr. Sagara gets up and writes the number eight on a drawing board (the Illuminacion del sol was shaped like a sun with eight rays of light). Drawing eight sideways, they realize it is the symbol for infinity, which is closely associated with immortality. They start their research again and finally figure out that the device has a key to it. Turn the key clockwise, you deactivate the device. Counterclockwise, you destroy the heart and kill the vampire.

Henry's torture:

Javier's main goal is trying to get Henry to confess. He chains Henry up, and Henry is unable to break the chains with the Illuminacion del sol draining his powers. Henry's torture includes being cut, having blood drawn from him, having the chains that held him pulled way too tight (kind of like the rack in the Medieval days), being burnt with a blowtorch, watching Delphine, a woman he loved and turned, turn against him under torture and beg his forgiveness via video, being beaten and whipped, and finally being starved (Vicki was later included in the last one).

Mike and Vicki's search for Henry:

Vicki and Mike come out of the sewer. After Vicki punches Mike and calls him a son of a bitch, they have an argument, and then they decide to team up. Vicki gets Coreen to research the Illuminacion del sol and sends Mike to the station to search for Javier Mendoza. At first Mike and Vicki are unsuccessful, but they interrogate a hooker, who says she had a date with Javier a week before. He took her to an abandoned church, where another woman (Delphine) was chained to the ceiling, trying to snap at her. Eventually Vicki and Mike persuade the hooker to show them where.

They enter the church to find a hungry Delphine chained to the ceiling. Vicki gives Delphine a little bit of her blood in exchange for answers, but the starving vampire is killed after the shutters open and expose her to sunlight. They leave with a blood-stained cup found on the floor.

Vicki and Mike return to the station. Kate, Mike's coworker, tells him that she could find nothing on Javier Mendoza in the present day but that Javier Mendoza was supposedly a Spanish Inquisitor hundreds of years ago who specialized in getting confessions from witches. The coroner tells them that there's blood and a mixture of herbs associated with immortality on the cup. Vicki and Mike figure out that there is a pattern to where Javier holds the vampires he captures, and that he uses their blood to stay alive.

They split up to find the abandoned church Henry's stuck in. Vicki walks into a church and her cell phone goes off, causing Javier to hear her and capture her. Javier ties Vicki up to a chair and places her in front of the starving Henry. Henry begs her forgiveness before breaking one chain, and just as he begins to break the other, Vicki frees herself and rolls away. Mike has found Javier, knocked him out, and gotten the key when Vicki yells for him. He bursts in and finds himself between Henry and Vicki. Henry grabs and drinks from Mike, almost killing him. Vicki gets the Illuminacion del sol off of him. Henry goes and kills Javier. Vicki hands Mike to Henry and returns to grab the Illuminacion del sol before they leave.

Mike: We seriously need to talk about your drinking problem.
Henry: Clearly, I stopped too soon.

Henry: Alright. Alright I confess. Forgive me Father for I have sinned. I should have killed you 400 hundred years ago!

Cassis: I ain't gotta show you nothing Princess
Vicki: Ok, you have two choices and only one of them has a happy ending. You do know about happy endings right?
Cassis: This where you come in good cop?
Mike: Actually she is the good cop.

The fictional device known as iluminación del sol is Spanish literally meaning "the illumination of the sun." It was created by a Daoist monk to steal immortality from vampires. Religiously, the highest ideal of a Daoist is to acquire immortality.

The Spanish Inquisition was established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella in response to Islamic Turk invasion. However, it was entirely controlled by the Spanish kings who used it to eliminate those who opposed them for political or religious reasons.
