Blood Price
Parts 1 & 2
The pilot episode and its sequel, in which we meet Victoria Nelson, are introduced to her past with Mike Celluci and the police department, and we first meet Henry Fitzroy.
Vicki Nelson used to be a very successful police detective, but she has retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease, and is losing her sight. Rather than be tied to a desk, she decided to become a private detective. While she is walking home one night, she sees a young man get killed by a shady character in a bowler hat and long coat. Things are odd, though, because the murderer very quickly disappeared into a blind alley. In addition, the victim’s throat was ripped out and he was drained of blood. When the police show up, Vicki is not pleased to see her ex-partner Mike Celluci is on the case. He was angry that she left the force because of her sight, and their romantic relationship crumbled as a result.
The police are baffled by the murder, but go with the idea that it is someone with a clawed glove on and high on drugs. The man's girlfriend, Coreen, was on the telephone with him when he was killed, and she hires Vicki to find out what the weird, dangerous-looking man was her boyfriend was telling her about when he was killed. Meanwhile, more people are being killed across the city. All Vicki can find at the scenes is an odd symbol in a circle and little bits of blood. It seems like a pattern is being marked across the city by the locations of the murders. The press is going crazy with talk of vampires.
As Vicki investigates, she keeps running into a man in his twenties, but she is not sure what his involvement is. When they both come upon another murder in the park, she mistakenly takes a swing at him, thinking he was the one who killed the victim. He accidentally knocks her out, but the police are coming so he takes her back to his condo. She finds out he's Henry Fitzroy, Henry VIII's son, a graphic novelist, and a vampire, though he is not involved in the killings. They end up working together, and there is some interest between them.
Henry and Vicki find that the killings are being committed by a lesser demon who is being summoned by someone to get him things like money and expensive toys. The lesser demon is using the killings to open the way for his master, a very powerful demon Henry encountered over a hundred years before. The audience knows that the man summoning the demon is a nerdy college student named Norman. Mike and the rest of the police do not believe it is a demon doing the killing, but they are looking for the person they think is responsible for the robberies that the demon committed when retrieving things for Norman.
Henry and Vicki come across the demon at the location for the next point in the symbol and they fight him, leaving Henry severely wounded. Vicki gives Henry blood from her wrist, a surprisingly heady experience for her, and that is enough to get him home to recuperate. While Henry is resting out the day, Vicki has to play his disheveled lover for the doorman who has come to stake Henry after suspecting he is a vampire.
After more investigation, they close in on Norman, and Vicki dashes over to his place, unwilling to wait for Henry to wake up. Norman has kidnapped Coreen, his secret crush, and captures Vicki when she tries to rescue Coreen. He plans to use Vicki as the last sacrifice needed to call the master demon. The lesser demon has told him the master demon will be able to make Coreen love him. Henry manages to save Vicki and Coreen, then the police arrive, but the master demon sucked Norman into the vortex with him when he was banished.
Vicki has magic symbols on her wrists that became tattooed on when the demon was summoned. Coreen has quit school and is now Vicki's office assistant. Throughout the episode, Mike has been torn between wanting to help, wanting Vicki back on the force, wanting her to stay out of danger, wanting to fight with her, wanting to kiss her, and so on. There is some romantic tension between Henry and Vicki. Henry seems very assured about the whole thing, but Vicki likes to be independent and in control, and seems is a bit concerned about what getting involved with Henry might mean.
