INTERVIEW WITH ALEX ZAHARA

Name: Alex Zahara
Character: Magnus O'Connor
Episode: 105 - Deadly Departed
Date: April 17th, 2007

1) Many people dream of being an actor, what's one thing you wish you would have known before you entered this profession?
I wish I would have known more about the business side of things.  That even though we are artists we also have to be business people because we can't trust that someone else, (agents, managers etc) are working for our best interests in mind.  It is a business to them only, they don't really think with artistic thinking, they want to make money and a lot of the projects that we as actors want to do don't actually pay that much so for them doing a project is in conflict with their money making goals.

2) If you were not an actor, what would be your career and why?
I would be a director, that is what I originally went to theatre school to do.  But outside of the biz I would probably be a swimming pool operator/manager/lifeguard, these  are the professions that I did before I went into acting and I got a lot of satisfaction out of them.

3) What is a movie that you could watch again and again?
First one that comes to mind is, "It's A Wonderful Life," Starring Jimmy Stewart.  It is a movie that reaffirms that life is about what you make it and not how much money you make.

4) What has been your favorite acting experience so far and why?
Man that is a tough Question!  Really the day I consider that I became an actor.  I was in a class at the University of British Columbia I had just finished a scene from Hedda Gabler, playing Judge Brack, it's a Henrick Ibsen play and my instructor John Brockington said, "Well Mr. Zahara that was shit!  Remember it's not about what you (the actor) feel it's about what we (the audience) get.  And we didn't get nothin. Want to try that again?"  I said yes JB.  I turned around and suddenly I could see the walls of the room I was supposed to be in, smell the carpet, see the pistols, the dresser, the wallpaper, and a piece of my brain know that there were some people out there in the dark and I was able to not that interfere.  I did the scene and JB said, "Well Mr. Zahara how was that?'  I said, I couldn't tell you, because I wasn't there." (meaning it was just my character that was conscious)  He said, "Perfect!  Remember that!  Moving on!"  And that is the day I become an actor!

5) What's your dream job? It is being a cast member on a successful Television show, staring in a #1 blockbuster movie or headlining a Broadway Play?
All of the above!  I want a dream career and these would all be part of that career!

6) Your resume is really impressive. You have guest starred on many wonderful sci-fi series like Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1 and Dark Angel. Do you see more of an interest in the supernatural genre on television these last few years?
yes there is a rise in the Supernatural, I think as a result of our culture trying to find out who, what and where we are and where we might be going.  Ever since the turn of the century when we were all supposed to crash and burn we have been asking why. What is beyond this mortal coil?  We have to find answers to questions that our 2000 year old guide book (the bible) just can''t answer in this modern world.

About Blood Ties

1) Were you familiar with the Tanya Huff books prior to appearing on the show?
No and I am still not.  I didn't know that the series was based on a series of books till just now, lol.

2) What can you tell us about your character? What appealed to you about this character?
Well my guy, Magnus is mostly a ghost for the episode so... it is pretty interesting.  I have never played a ghost before!  He is a low rent hit man for the Irish Mob and ends up in jail because of a judicial conspiracy, of course I am guilty but I still get hell bent on revenge!  I liked the thought of playing a ghost and I did it on my birthday , halloween, so it was like a dream come true, getting all dressed and painted up on my Halloween B day playing a ghost and getting paid for it!

3) What was the interviewing process like for Blood Ties? Were you asked to act out a scene from the episode or was this more of an open casting call?
It was a regular audition.  Get your scenes the day before go in and do your bit.  Of course a lot of it was, GRrrrhhhh, AARRGGGHHH, UUUHHHHHH, being a shost and all!  LOL.

4) What was it like working on the set? How many days were you on the set?
I was on set about 5 out of the 7 days maybe more because we had to do a lot of body painting and tattooing etc. Working on set was great, the crew was really great and the director David Winkler really knew what he wanted and kept us on track and we did a bang up job, I thought!

5) Who is the first person you told that you got the role on Blood Ties?
I am not sure?  I think it was my girlfriend at the time.  She had helped me rehearse so I wanted to share the good news with her first!

6) How did you celebrate getting this role?
i jumped up and down and yelled and called my girlfriend!  The crew also gave me a cake on set and sang me Happy Birthday!

7) Is there a chance your character will return later?
Oh I am not sure, but probably not.  Who knows though.  It is supernatural show!  I may play another character too!

8) Is Blood Ties the kind of show that you would watch, beyond the episode that you guest starred in?
Absolutely!  Iw as born on Halloween and am a big Sci Fi and Fantasy, Supernatural fan!  I watch all that stufF!! LOL!

9) What are your upcoming projects?
I am writing a film and working on a tv series with a friend.  I will be playing a role in a movie called, Blood a Butcher's Tale, strring Aaron Douglas from Battlestar Galactica and Peter Greene from Pulp Fiction, (he played Zed.
